Born 1948; studied in Tübingen, Munich and Geneva; following a period of academic research in London, awarded a doctorate in law by the university of Munich; Judge at the Arbeitsgericht (Labour Court) Oldenburg; authorised, by the University of Bremen, to teach labour law, sociology of law and social law; Professor ad interim at the faculty of law of the universities of Frankfurt and Bremen; President of the Landesarbeitsgericht (Labour Appeal Court) Schleswig-Holstein (1989-2000); Honorary Professor at the University of Bremen in labour law, specifically in European labour law; Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Communities from 15 July 2000 to 6 October 2006.

1988-1993 Scientific Advisory Board of the Centre for Legal Policy (ZERP) at the University of Bremen; 1992-1996 TV Council of the ZDF (second channel of the German television); 1994-1995 collaboration, as expert, on the European Expertise Service (EU) project for the reform of the labour law of Kirghizstan; 1997-1998 President of the Association for promoting the prevention of criminality in the State Capital of Kiel; 1997-2000 Advisory Board of the Kiel Climate Protection Fund; 1997-2000 Advisory Board of the journal “Arbeit und Recht” (Labour and Law); 2000 Network of legal experts on the application of Community law on equal treatment for men and women, established by the Commission of the European Communities; 2000-2006 Committee for orienting informatics and new technologies at the Court of Justice of the European Communities, 2004-2006 President of that committee; 2003-now Board of Trustees of the Academy of European Law, Trier; 2004-2008 Board of Trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg; 2007 Advisory Board of the Forum Justizgeschichte (Forum History of Justice); consultant to the Europe Kolleg, Hamburg; ample experience as a conciliator for the settlement of labour/management conflicts in the private and the public sectors; Vice Chairperson of the Arbitration Court of the German Federation of Trade Unions.

About 150 publications, mainly on labour law and European law; 1993-2000 co-editor of the journal Informationsdienst Europ?isches Arbeits- und Sozialrecht (Information service European Labour Law and Social Law); co-editor of a handbook on women’s employment and co-editor in charge of the quadrilingual liber amicorum “Une communauté de droit” in honour of the former president of the European Court of Justice Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias.
