Profession
Prof. Dr. Jan Wouters (1964) is professor of international law and international organizations and director of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies and Institute for International Law at the University of Leuven, as well as visiting professor at the College of Europe.
He is also president of the United Nations Association Flanders-Belgium, president of the Strategic Advisory Council International Flanders, which advises the Flemish Government, and practises law as Of Counsel at Linklaters in Brussels.
Experience
Professor Wouters studied law and philosophy in Antwerp and Yale University (LL.M. 1990), worked as a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School and defended his PhD at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1996.
He has held teaching positions at the Universities of Antwerp and Maastricht, was a visiting professor at Liège University and Kyushu University, and worked as référendaire at the European Court of Justice (1991-1994).
He is the editor of the International Encyclopedia of Intergovernmental Organizations and is vice-director of the Revue belge de droit international.
Other Professional Activities include
Professor Wouters has published widely on international, European, company and financial law (more than 330 publications including 20 books and over 60 international journal articles), including a recent comprehensive handbook on public international law (Grondlijnen van Internationaal Recht, Intersentia, 2005, with M. Bossuyt), a book on the World Trade Organization (The World Trade Organization. A Legal and Institutional Analysis, Intersentia, 2007, with B. De Meester) as well as a number of edited books, including Conflict Prevention. Policy and Legal Aspects (T.M.C. Asser Press, 2004), Legal Instruments in the Fight Against International Terrorism (Martinus Nijhof, 2004), The United Nations and the European Union. An Ever Stronger Partnership (T.M.C. Asser Press, 2006), Multilevel Regulation and the EU. The Interplay between Global, European and National Normative Processes (Martinus Nijhoff, 2008) and The Europeanisation of International Law. The Status of International Law in the EU and Member States (T.M.C. Asser Press, 2008).
He often gives courses to international and national officials, has advised a great number of international organizations and is frequently asked to comment in the media on international events.
